Corporal Walter Eldredge Bouknight, 26, from Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina died aboard Carnival Fantasy on Friday, January 27, 2012 after he fell from one deck to another while the Carnival Cruise Lines’ Carnival Fantasy was docked at Nassau in the Bahamas.
Carnival Fantasy had departed Charleston, South Carolina on Wednesday January 25th, for 5-day Caribbean cruise. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, a son of David W., Jr. and Frances Koon Bouknight. He was a 2003 graduate of Batesburg-Leesville High School and attended Clemson University. Corporal Walter Eldredge Bouknight, served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps, and worked with his father in the family business, Bouknight Pumps.
Bahamas police said in a statement that Bouknight apparently jumped from one floor to another aboard the Carnival Fantasy ship that had docked in Nassau late Friday. Bouknight was declared dead at the scene.
Carnival issued a statement saying Corporal Walter Eldredge Bouknight apparently fell. They said the ship’s visit to Freeport on Saturday was canceled as the investigation continued. Carnival Cruise Lines said those passengers were refunded for the government taxes and fees for a missed port of call in Freeport because of the delay attributed to the man’s death.
