Time of Death 8:30
During a pub-crawl night on the town to celebration the end of Prohibition, Kelly Ryann Dorrell, 26 and her boyfriend, 40, were aboard the Queen Mary docked permanently in Long Beach as a tourist attraction, when Dorrell decided to pose for a photograph sitting atop a railing, accidentally falling overboard around 2030 hours on Monday, December 5, 2011.
The couple were on Deck 4, about 75 feet above the water when Dorrell fell into the frigid Long Beach, California water, which had a temperature at the time of 60 degrees.
Dorrell, a recently certified teacher who wanted to work as an elementary school teacher, had worked at a local preschool and as a substitute teacher for the Bellflower School District J.
Friends report she had been drinking prior to the accident aboard the Queen Mary which operates as a hotel and restaurant. Further reports say Dorrell had only four drinks over a four hour period and she and the boyfriend had taken a taxi to the Queen Mary, in order to make sure the pub crawl evening was a safe outing.
Dorrell's boyfriend jumped overboard in an attempt to save her, but was overcome by hypothermia and had to be rescued himself.
Dorrell who graduated with honors from Millikan High School's Quest Program in 2003, was currently working as a secretary in the Pediatrics Unit at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center's Miller Children's Hospital died as a result of the accident.
