Omaha, Nebraska Couple Die After Cruise Ship Cabin Fire - April 12, 2016

Larry Morris Hammer, 74, and his wife Cristy Jeins Hammer, 72, from Omaha, Nebraska died from smoke inhalation, after a cruise fire began in their cruise ship cabin aboard International Expeditions' Estrella Amazonica on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 around 0200 hours while sailing on the Amazon River in Iquitos, Peru, South America.

Initial reports say the fire was the result of an apparent electrical fire. Estrella Amazonica crew members found the couple in their cabin after the fire alarm sounded. Larry Hammer was dead and Christy Hammer died on the way to a hospital in Iquitos.

Larry Hammer was a University of Nebraska-Lincoln employee for about 30 years, retiring as the director of programs and continuing education.

Christy Hammer was a former Lincoln Public Schools teacher, UNL adjunct literature professor and senior analyst at Gallup in Omaha.

The couple resided in Tiburon, a community in the southwest portion of the metropolitan area of Omaha, Nebraska.
