Time of Cruise Ship DeathSamantha Broberg

Samantha Broberg, 33, from Arlington, Texas went missing on Friday the 13th, May 13, 2016, on the first night of the cruise aboard Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Liberty in the early morning hours according to CCTV video footage. She is married to Broberg Racing business owner and thoroughbred horse trainer Karl Broberg, 45, who was not on the cruise with her. The couple have four children.

The entire cruise ship was searched after her traveling companions reported her missing. The search of the ship including the common areas of the ship and a cabin search which included closets, bathrooms, under the beds and on the balconies, as cruise ship crew tried to locate the missing woman. When the crew was sure Broberg wasn’t aboard, she was reported missing to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) around 1700 hours, who began flying sorties to look for Broberg.

"Coast Guard HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crews from Aviation Training Center Mobile, Alabama, and Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas, have alternated sorties since beginning the search, saturating a 22 by 63 nautical mile area with a combined search area total of more than 3,000 square miles", Coast Guard Petty Officer Andy Kendrick.

Passengers report being in “lock down” after being told to return to their cabins so crew could determine if missing passenger Samantha Broberg was aboard. Her photo was posted aboard with a notice to call guest services if anyone had information. Later, when the CCTV video was checked, she was seen falling from deck 10 around 0200 hours.

At this point, there are no known witnesses to the incident. It’s unclear why she was on deck ten at two in the morning, if she was alone, if she with someone, who that person might have been. It would seem, none of her traveling companions were with her on deck, as she wasn’t reported missing until much later that day.

Deck 10 is where the Coney Island Pool and Twister Waterslide are located. This is also where the outdoor Carnival's Seaside Threatre, Diamond Steakhouse and Emile's Lido Restaurant are located. Deck ten has only 66 cabins, all located at the forward end of the ship, 42 of the cabins have balconies. Falling after jumping or being tossed from any of those bow stateroom balconies would be disastrous.

The FBI will lead the investigation into the disappearance to determine if she jumped or foul play was involved. As of Sunday morning, with over 48 hours having passed, it's highly unlikely she will be found alive. The search is more of a recovery effort which may bring answers as to how she ended up in the sea.

Carnival Cruise Line's issued a statement on the incident, “Earlier today, a 33-year-old female guest on the cruise ship Carnival Liberty was reported missing by traveling companions. A ship-wide search was conducted along with a review of the ship’s camera footage. Unfortunately, it appears the guest may have gone overboard early this morning. Authorities were notified including the U.S. Coast Guard which is initiating a search effort in the area where the ship was located when the individual was last seen. Carnival’s CareTeam is providing support to the guest’s traveling companions and family. We are keeping our guest and her loved ones in our thoughts during this difficult time.”

A later statement from Carnival clarified the video evidence. "Based on the video analysis, we can confirm that it appears she climbed up and sat on a deck railing and subsequently fell backwards," Carnival spokeswoman Jennifer De La Cruz said.

A statement from the family on Saturday said, “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the incident that occurred on the Carnival Cruise Ship. We hope and pray the U.S. Coast Guard is able to bring Samantha home. We ask for privacy as our family comes together during this difficult time.”Samantha (Stogner) Broberg's mother Christine Stogner and father Scott Stogner both live in Arlington. Christine Stogner is originally from Carteret, New Jersey and is reportedly a retired City of Euless, New Jersey police officer. Scott Stogner is from Mansfield, Texas and works at KLLM Transport.

Carnival Liberty departed from Galveston, Texas for a 4-night Eastern Caribbean cruise on Thursday May 12 at 4:00pm and was sailing towards Cozumel, Mexico when Broberg went overboard around 0200 hours in the morning. You can "Suicidal Behavior". Suicidal behavior is any action that could cause a person to die. Most common cases are sitting on or crawling over cruise ship railings, drinking to excess and swimming or getting into brawls. Less common are cases where passengers are killed in accidents after they enter unsafe, restricted or forbidden areas on or off the ship. If other information contradicts this cause of death, we will update.

Tuesday, May 17, 2016 - Update

Due to new information in this case, Cruise Bruise Investigates has changed the cause of death to a Suspicious Death. By definition, "Suspicious Deaths - Cautious distrust of someone or something related to the death. There may be suspicious activities in the time line of events leading up the death that give us the impression, something about the death is questionable."

A Click 2 Houston newspaper article by By Jonathan Martinez - Anchor/Reporter and Sofia Ojeda - Anchor/Reporter is saying, "A picture of a section of the 10th deck on the Liberty where the 33-year-old Broberg apparently went overboard has surfaced, but Carnival says the reddish stain in the picture is from a spilled red-colored cocktail."

The area is roped off and the article quotes Derrick Lewis said he was standing there when he said investigators found a knife nearby. "They found a knife, in the trash, right by the incident. I was standing right there," Lewis said."

The photos of the "investigators" at the scene are showing a team of Carnival employees, in uniform, investigating during the cruise, not FBI investigators.Click 2 Houston quotes in the article a Twitter tweet by Sofia Ojeda which claims to quote a tweet by @carnivalcruise saying "Stain is not blood, but a spill of some sort". The alleged tweet by @carnivalcruise can't be found in Carnival's Twitter feed.

Sofia Ojeda's (@KPRCSofiaOjeda) Twitter profile identifies her as "Anchor at @KPRC2 Channel 2 News. @NBC affiliate in Houston. Latina, washed up college baller, Jersey girl. Join me weekend mornings!"

If the claim by Derrick Lewis is true, the FBI may look at that evidence and investigate whether it is possible for Broberg to be seen sitting on the railing before falling backward, yet somebody stabbing her, getting her up onto the railing, then pushing her off the railing and can be out of view of the CCTV camera. The entire scenario seems far-fetched, at this point. Without seeing the CCTV footage, it is a possible scenario though.

The FBI would also take possession of the alleged knife found in the trash can, test it for blood and compare any blood found with known DNA samples from Broberg. Based on the assumption of truth regarding an alleged knife found at the scene, the case begins to have some of the intriguing ear markings of the Suspicious Death of Annette Mizener case.
