Frederick C Kentz Jr, 91, from Spring Lake, New Jersey and Vero Beach, Florida, passed away on Cunard Line Queen Victoria on March 25, 2011. Kentz was a retired Judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey. He had been a court judge for over 30 years, in one court or another, including as a recall judge.
Judge Kentz was admitted to the Bar of New Jersey in 1944 and he was also admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. After admission to the bar, he began the practice of law in Summit with his father under the firm name of Kentz and Kentz. The late William R. Gilson thereafter joined the firm which then became known as Kentz, Kentz and Gilson. From 1960 to 1966, Judge Kentz served as counsel to the Union County Park Commission.
Judge Kentz was appointed a juvenile and domestic relations judge in Union County by the late Governor Hughes in 1966. The late Governor Cahill then appointed him to the Superior Court of New Jersey in 1973. By order of the Supreme Court, Judge Kentz was thereafter assigned to the Chancery Division, General Equity Part, in Hudson County as the presiding judge of the court. In 1980, he was assigned to that court as the presiding judge in Union County, where he remained until his retirement in 1989. He continued as a recall judge by order of the Supreme Court until he resumed the practice of law in 1999 and joined the firm of O'Connor, Morss & O'Connor as of counsel.
Judge Kentz was a member and former trustee of the Union County Bar Association. He was also a member of the New Jersey Bar Association and a former member of its General Council. As a member of the American Bar Association, he served on the executive committee of the National Conference of State Trial Judges, a section of the Judicial Administration Division. He was also a member of the National College of Probate Judges. Judge Kentz was a member of the National Council of Juvenile Court Judges as well as a member and former president of the State Council of Juvenile Court Judges.
Kentz was pronounced dead due to a sudden cardiac event. Kentz was transported to Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he was seen by the Coroner. Cause of death was from natural causes.
