Alice Ann Jacob, 72, from Brewster, New York was on a "bucket list" Transatlantic cruise with her daughter Alethea aboard Princess Cruises' Regal Princess on September 24, 2015. Jacob suddenly got ill while the cruise ship was off the coast of Ireland, requiring an Irish Coast Guard.medical evacuation from the cruise ship via helicopter.
Jacob was medevaced to Cork University Hospital in Ireland. Cork University Hospital is the largest university teaching hospital in Ireland and is the only Level 1 trauma center in the country due to the presence of over 40 different medical and surgical specialties on the campus.
Jacob had a stent in her leg which failed, creating a circulatory crisis and heart damage. She survived the initial surgery, but her heart was weakened by the incident and she died several days later.
The Regal Princess Transatlantic 15 Night British Isles & Norway Passage (Copenhagen To New York) Cruise began at Copenhagen, Denmark on September 11, 2015. Regal Princess then sailed onto Kristiansand, Norway, Bergen, Norway, Greenock (Glasgow), Scotland, Belfast, Northern Ireland, Cobh (Cork), Ireland with four days at sea on the Transatlantic crossing portion of the cruise, arriving at St. John's, Newfoundland, then Halifax, Nova Scotia before ending at New York, New York.
At the age of 55, Jacob put herself through college while working and got her BS in Computer Science, graduating Magna Cum Laude.
She retired at age 65 from Community Choice Heath Plan where she was their data base administrator, spending the next seven years traveling and enjoying her family.
Jacob volunteered for Seniors Helping Seniors where she taught basic computer skills at St. Bartholomew's Parish.
