Ben Bythewood, 49, was sailing on a cruise with his wife Amy on Monday, June 1, 2015 aboard Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Magic in the Gulf Of Mexico when he passed away.

Bythewood began experiencing breathing difficulty the first night of the cruise, and despite the efforts of medical personnel, he died the following evening.

Carnival Magic had embarked from Galveston, Texas on a 7-day Caribbean Cruise on Sunday, May 31, 2015.

Bythewood had studied psychology at East Texas Baptist University, a private, coeducational Christian university in Marshall, Texas. He later owned a small computer services company and had served as former mayor of Woodville, Texas for several terms. Woodville, Texas had a population of 2,586 at the 2010 census.

Bythewood took a trip to Hollywood in 2013 to visit with the producers of American Idol where he presented American Idol Woodville, Texas contestant , "hometown hero" Kree Harrison the key to the City of Woodville in front of millions of viewers. Bythewood was able to practice the presentation with the show's host, Ryan Seacrest, before the live performance.

May 16, 2013, the City of Woodville hosted a Kree Harrison watch party on the final show shown at the Joe Wheat Dogwood Amphitheater in downtown Woodville. Upwards of 150 people sat on concrete, chairs, and blankets to enjoy the two hour season finale of American Idol. Kree was runner-up.

Tyler County residents met each Wednesday night during "American Idol" to have watch parties to support Kree Harrison at the Tree Restaurant on South Magnolia in Woodville.
