Cruise Ship Deaths By Date
The next two deaths are particularly alarming, given we have been posting on the Cruise Bruise News blog that May is Cruise Ship Deaths Awareness Month, and both cruise ship deaths were passenger preventable.
May 17, 2015 - Norwegain Cruise Line Norwegian Gem - Pool drowning. A 10-year-old girl drown in the cruise ship swimming pool while the cruise ship was off the coast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. May 17, 2015 - The Emanuel - Overboard - British Woman, 64, falls overboard from small cruise ship, drowns in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The woman was reportedly on deck with her husband and friends having a drink, when she fell overboard. Crew members dove into the sea to save her, but efforts to revive failed. Details unfolding. May 13, 2015 - James R Bellock, 73, from Indiana passed away while on a Caribbean cruise.
May 7, 2015 - Kenneth Finnerty, 91, from New York, a former Staten Island Ferry captain passed away at home. He was well-known for having delivered babies on two different occassions while the ferry was underway at sea. Finnerty had worked for the New York Department Of Transportation for 33 years.
May 5, 2015 - Norwegian Cruise Line - Norwegian Breakaway - A passenger was reportedly dead when the cruise ship arrived at Dockyard in Bermuda. Case is under investigation.
May 4, 2015 - John W. Johnson Texas Ferry - Overboard. A male passenger was seen clilmbing over the railing while the ferry was sailing in the Gulf Of Mexico from Galveston, Texas to Bolivar. There were 29 vehicles and 87 passengers aboard at the time. The USCG stopped all ferry service in the region while a search was underway from 0730 hours until 1100 hours. April 23, 2015 - Royal Caribbean Cruise Line Adventure Of The Seas - Male cruise ship passegner, 73, passed away while on a Caribbean cruise excursion to Jolly Beach in Antigua. The male passenger was cruising with his wife when he said that he wasn't feeling well, but went ashore any way. He was found with blue skin beneath the water. Attempts to revive him failed. Due the color of skin when found, a doctor who assisted, said he suspected a heart attack while the passenger was in the water. This case will be updated when more information is available.

April 15, 2015 - Howard Eisenberg, 74, from New Jersey, passed away due to pre-existing complications from Parkinson's Disease. Eisenberg was sailing on his cruise ship from Fort Lauderdale to Madeira, Portugal when he passed away.
April 15, 2015 - Carnival Cruise Lines Carnival Conquest - Robert Cole, 31, from Viginia died from injuries received while on a cruise ship excursion in the Cayman Islands. Cole was on a jetski when it was t-boned by a jetski driven by a Carnival Paradise 15-year-old male passenger from New York.
April 13, 2015- Pullmantur Cruises' Horizon - Dominic William O'Carroll, 67, overboard. near Puerto Rico. USCG search has been unproductive.
April 9, 2015 - Cunard Line Britannia - Thomas William Checkley, 90, from the United Kingdom, passed away on the second voyage of new cruise ship Britannia. Checkley was cruising with his wife Dorothy.
April 6, 2015 - Actor James Best, 88, known for his role as Sheriff Rosco P Coltrane on the television show Dukes Of Hazzard from 1979 to 1985, died in Hickory, North Carolina at a hospice, after having becoming ill on a cruise ship, which turned into pnumonia. He passed away after the short illness.
April 2, 2015 - Holland America Line Ryndam - Murder/Suicide . Darla J (Campbell) Mellinger Banner and husband John C. Banner.
April 1, 2015 - Cunard Line - Queen Elizabeth - Cruise ship passenger died after fall from tender while boarding the cruise ship from in port of Silhanoukville, Cambodia. Crew members dove in to help the victim. But, she later died in a local hospital. Queen Elizabeth was on a 112-night world cruise which embarked from Southampton, UK. Details unfolding. March 30, 2015 (Canada) BC Ferries - Queen Of Oak Bay - Overboard, Male, 45, seen by three passengers jumping off lower car deck around 4:15 pm. Crew were alerted of the overboard as the ferry sailed to Nanaimo, British Columbia. A search took place, the man was rescued, cpr was performed and he was transported to a local hospital where he later died. Passengers were given free beverages for the remaining cruise of the ship. March 18, 2015 - Costa Cruises' Costa Fascinosa and MSC Splendida passengers were gunned down by terrorists while visiting the Bardo National Museum in Tunis, Tunisia. The dead and injured are estimated at 50+. One story with a twist is that of the Costa Fascinosa piano player Antonello Tonna. Tonna didn't go into port with the cruise ship passengers, but he was performing on Costa Concordia when it hit the reef and then sunk.

March 17, 2015 - Overboard - Carnival Cruise Lines' Carnival Triumph had a man overboard in the Gulf Of Mexico after setting sail from Galveston, Texas on a Mexico Riviera 5-day cruise. The man was reported to be a 54-years-old passenger, seen on cruise ship security camera climbing over the railing of his cabin balcony and falling overboard. His body was found at sea off the coast of Mexico by a Mexican rescue team and was taken to Mexico, for further repatriation back to the U.S. Carnival Triumph is leaving their Texas home port for New Orleans, Louisiana in April 2016.
March 13, 2015 Star Cruises' Super Star Libra - Overboard - Cruise ship security cameras verified Mulianto Raik, 50, from Malaysia went over the cruise ship railing, about 8 miles up the coast from Muka Head, Penang, Malaysia. Search and rescue operations failed, but a fisherman found his body several days later, 19 miles north of Muka Head.
March 12, 2015 - Spirit Of America - Overboard - Larry Brown, 55, from New York, jumped overboard while Spirit Of America was docked at the St. George Terminal in New York. A search for Mr. Brown ended without success. Spirit Of New York, also known as the Staten Island Ferry, is free and runs seven days a week, rain or shine, givuing a view of New York's most famous landmarks. It's popular with tourists.
March 8, 2015 - Carnival Cruise Lines Carnival Glory - Overboard, missing cruise ship passenger Cameron Smook, 21, from Virginia
March 5, 2015 - Carnival Cruise Lines' employee, Edward J. Kulig, 57, an avid cruiser from Florida passed away after a short illness, not on a cruise. Kulig was the Post Booking Sales Supervisor for Cruise Cruise Lines.
March 1, 2015 - Disney Cruise Line - Philip E. Munch, 56, from Tennessee passed away suddenly while on a cruise with his wife and children. Munch had played baseball for Cleveland State, before being drafted to play minor league baseball with the Boston Red Sox.
February 25, 2015 Carnival Cruise Lines' Carnival Triumph - Richard J Heinrichs, 83, from Texas passed away in the Gulf Of Mexico while the cruise ship was sailing to Cozumel, Mexico.
February 17, 2015 - Norwegian Cruise Line Norwegian Jewel - Theresa Lynn Meuers, 55, from Minneapolis, Minnesota was on a Caribbean cruise, which had arrived in Belize earlier in the day. She was riding in a taxi while in Belize heading to Jaguar Paw, when the taxi was hit by a passing truck on the highway. The truck and taxi both ultimately rolled, with Meuers being killed.
February 6, 2015 - Alfred Lee Evans, 44, from Centerville, Maryland passed away on a Caribbean cruise.
February 6, 2015 - Francis K. Rediger, 76, from Missouri, was the wife of Cape Girardeau, Missouri Mayor Harry Rediger. Francis Rediger died doing one of the things she loved most, sailing on a cruise. The couple had taken an estimated 50 cruises. Rediger passed away while the cruise ship was in Grenada, as a result of a long fight with cancer.
February 1, 2015 - Celebrity Cruises' Constellaton - Overboard - Mr.Carol Tremblay, 66, from Canada, fell from the 11th deck of the cruise ship around 0300 hours off the coast of Florida according to cruise ship security camera.
January 31, 2015 - P&O Arcadia - Beryl Robinson, 84, from the United Kingdom, became ill on a 24-night cruise from Southampton, UK to San Francisco, California to celebrate her 62nd wedding anniversary. The family was medically disembarked by the cruise line while in Mexico. Then, while traveling home, Mrs. Robinson passed away.
January 21, 2015 - Dave Jordan, 83, from Shefford, United Kingdom passed away after becoming ill on a cruise.
January 20, 2015 - Carnival Cruise Lines - Phillip Aaron Webb, 30, from Wheeling, Missouri passed away unexpectedly on his cruise. Webb left behind a wife and threee children.
January 20, 2015 - Regent Seven Seas Voyager - Joann Harmon Arnold, 74, from St. Louis, Missouri, was near Thailand, when she had a heart attack and passed away while on a month-long cruise to Asia.
January 8, 2015 - Pura Vida Princess Sunk In Rough Seas - Off Punta Leon, Costa Rica - Three passengers died when the cruise ship sent out an SOS, then sunk 30 minutes later. The dead were Edna Oliver, 68, from the USA, Ivor Stanley Hopkins, 80, from the UK and Sharon Johnson, 70, from Canada. There were 96 passengers rescued.
