Hayman Ronald Lucas, 14 – Alcohol Related Death, Majesty Of The Seas Passenger, July 22, 1994, Time of Death 5:00.
On July 22, 1994, Hayman Ronald Lucas, 14, from Elmont, New York, died eleven days after his fourteen birthday aboard the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s Majesty Of The Seas while on a seven-day Caribbean cruise with his family.
The teen died of alcohol poisoning, from booze supplied by an adult passenger, said to be 24-years old, aboard the ship.
The ship returned to the Port Of Miami two days later and reported the death to the United States Coast Guard.
The father and stepmother Lucas was on the cruise with were stunned when their son, a student at Floral Park Memorial High was found. Lucas played alto saxophone in the school band.
The family from an Albany, New York suburb says that they thought the cruise ship had a pretty controlled environment, and the boy had been hanging out in the teen lounge with other teens he met on the ship prior to his death.
The ship was sailing from Jamaica to the Bahamas when the boy was found by a crew member, staggering on deck at about 0500 hours, and escorted him to his family’s cabin, and his father and stepmother were awakened. About 1100 hours, the stepmother called the medical office to report he’d stopped breathing. The boy was pronounced dead at 1205 hours.
Cruise line spokesman Rich Steck said the ship’s doctors found “a large quantity of vomit and alcohol in his lungs”. His blood alcohol level was 0.29. Reports say the boy consumed six tumblers-about a bottle’s worth-of tequila and rum in a two-hour period.
