On Friday, August 18, 2000, Paula Ann Gunderson, 45 ,from Phoenix, Arizona, jumped overboard from the Carnival Cruise Line cruise ship Carnival Holiday, while the cruise ship was off the coast of Southern California on a voyage from Los Angeles, California to Ensenada, Mexico.
Gunderson jumped overboard into the Pacific Ocean and the “man overboard” call was issued at 11:05 p.m. while Carnival Holiday was off the coast in San Diego County the next day around 1:30 a.m by the crew of a state Department of Fish and Game vessel based in Dana Point.
The cause of death was salt-water drowning and it is ruled a suicide.
The Department of Fish and Game vessel and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter found Carnival Holiday lifeboats searching the waters when they arrived.
