Cruise ship passenger John Murrell, 79, from New Bern, North Carolina, was sailing aboard Carnival Cruise Lines’ Carnival Liberty in cabin #2455 with his wife Frances Simmons Murrell on December 11, 2009, when he passed away.

At approximately 0805 hours on December 11, Mr. Murrell required medical assistance due to cardiac arrest.

The ship’s medical team responded and performed CPR however crew could not revive Mr. Murrell. Mr. Murrell was pronounced deceased at 0835 hours. At the time of his death, Carnival Liberty was midway between Ocho Rios, Jamaica and Miami, Florida.

Mr. Murrell’s body was released to Miami Coroner’s Office December 12, 2009 upon ship’s arrival back at the home port.

Carnival Liberty had embarked from Miami, Florida on Saturday, December 5, 2009 around 1600 hours for a 7-night Caribbean cruise with calls in Cozumel, Mexico, Grand Cayman and Ocho Rios in Jamaica.

Murrell retired from Coca-Cola Bottlling Co. after over 30 years of service and was employed part-time at the Travel Lodge. His membership at Reform Shiloh M. B. Church included serving as a member of the Trustee Board and the Men’s Choir.
