July 31, 2010 – Celebrity Cruises Celebrity Solstice – Alice Celestine Cole-Taylor: Alice Celestine Cole-Taylor, 85, from Petersburg, Virginia retired public health nurse, passed away from cardiac arrest resulting in death.
She attended the public schools in Richmond, and was valedictorian of the graduating Class of 1941 Armstrong High School in Richmond, Va. After graduating from St. Philip’s Hospital School of Nursing (Medical College of Va.) and also completing the Public Health Nursing Program at the Medical College of Virginia, she went on to fulfill her dream of service to others.
For many years she was employed as a staff nurse of the Instructive Visiting Nurse Association, a Hospital Coordinator for the Richmond City Practical Nursing Program and a Nurse Supervisor at Central State Hospital.
In addition, she distinguished herself by becoming both the first Black Industrial Nurse employed by the American Tobacco Company in Richmond, Va., and the first Black Public Health Nurse employed by the Petersburg Health Department.
She retired in 1985 from a career in Public Health Nursing after 26 years with the Virginia State Health Department.
