Ramakrishnan Balasubramanian from India, worked aboard Costa Atlantica. On January 2, 2011 at 1955 hours he went overboard from Costa Cruises’, Costa Atlantica.
A search began by ship’s personnel and the United States Coast Guard (USCG) unit out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida after the “man overboard” call went out. Balasubramanian was was found in the water by the USCG. He was transferred to EMS and taken to Broward General Hospital where the medical team were unable to revive him.
Preliminary investigation was conducted by the USCG Sector Miami Investigations Officer in conjunction with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. Cause of death was determined to be drowning and manner of death was determined to be a suicide by Dr. L. G. Davis, Associate Medical Examiner of Broward County.
