Time of Cruise Ship DeathKenneth Gemmell, 30, from Bailieborough in the United Kingdom, was a flight attendant who was celebrating his 30th birthday while on a gay and lesbian cruise sailing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida at 1700 hours, on February 5, 2012. He jumped overboard while the cruise ship was off the coast of Mexico.

Gemmell was sailing aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines’ Allure Of The Seas, with calls at Labadee, Costa Maya, and Cozumel, Mexico before returning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Allure Of The Seas was on a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise.

A Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines’ spokeswoman said, “Our care team has been in contact with the family and providing them with any support and assistance they may need. He [Mr Gemmell] was alone on the balcony in his stateroom on Deck 11 when he stepped on top of the balcony table in order to jump over the balcony railing. The footage is consistent with the eyewitness report from another guest.”

In a similar incident, Steven Paul Hirschfield, 37, was aboard another gay and lesbian holiday cruise ship as a performer for the party cruise, part of the San Diego Gay Pride Festival, when he suddenly jumped overboard from the third deck of Hornblower Cruises’ Inspiration around 2310 hours on Saturday night, July 19, 2008.
