Clifford Menezes, 27, a Holland America Line crew member from Agashi, Vira , India went overboard around 0300 hours on Sunday, December 21, 2014, while the ship was near Egmont Key , off the coast of Florida. Holland America Line Ryndam was near the end of a 14-day Caribbean cruise when Clifford Menezes went missing, as the cruise ship was returning to Tampa, Florida.
Clifford Menezes was reported to have begun employment with Holland America Line as cook on December 6, 2014 and was to have a six month contract aboard the cruise ship Ryndam.
Menezes was last seen aboard Ryndam via the cruise ship’s closed circuit television (CCTV) when he entering his cabin on December 20.
His body washed up the beach near the 1500 block of Gulf Boulevard on Sand Key around 0715 hours on Friday, December 26, 2014., by a person walking on the beach in this Clearwater, Florida beach community. Clifford Menezes’ body was clothed in shorts and a t-shirt, indicating he was enjoying leisure time, when he went overboard from the cruise ship.
His parents were notified by email the day he went missing from the cruise ship, that it was suspected he went overboard while the Rydam was at sea. After the body washed up on shore, the family received a second email from Holland America Line.
The United States Coast Guard (USCG) was contacted around 0800 hours on December 21, when the ship’s personnel reported Clifford Menezes missing from the cruise ship.The USCG searched by sea and by helicopter all along the Tampa area coast, until evening before calling off the search.
The Pinellas County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled Clifford Menezes’ death an “accident”.
