On March 17, 2015, George Uthuppu, 54, from Kingwood, Texas was on a birthday celebration cruise with his wife Mary, when he went overboard in the Gulf Of Mexico while sailing aboard Carnival Cruise Lines’ Carnival Triumph.

Carnival Triumph had embarked from Galveston, Texas on a Mexico Riviera 5-day cruise and was 55 nautical miles (101.8 km) from the Progreso coast of Progreso, Mexico when Uthuppu, originally from India, fell into the sea.

George Uthuppu was reported to be seen on the cruise ship security camera sitting on the railing of his cabin balcony and falling overboard. His body was found at sea off the coast of Mexico by a Mexican rescue team and was taken to Mexico, for further repatriation back to the U.S.

Uthuppu was a respiratory therapist at LBJ Hospital in Houston, Texas. He went for the cruise with his wife Mary, a nurse at the Herman Hospital, in celebration of his birthday, which was on March 15.

His family arrived in Mexico a few days later to recover his body, which had been discovered by the Mexican Navy, floating in the sea.

According to the autopsy, George Uthuppu was under the influence of alcohol at the time. The cause of death was multiple trauma and a burst liver, caused by falling 30 meters into the water. Drowning was ruled out as the cause of death.
