Kaylyn Rose Sommer, 24 – Suicidal Behavior, Norwegian Pearl Passenger, November 12, 2015, Time of Death 7:00.
Kaylyn Rose Sommer, 24, from Charleston, South Carolina was a cruise ship passenger aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines Norwegian Pearl on Thursday, November 12, 2015 when she went overboard from 11th deck around 7pm while the ship was 22 nautical miles off the coast of Cuba.
Kaylyn Rose Sommer fell from a height of 80 feet while the cruise ship was traveling at 16 knots (roughly 25 miles per hour) 120 miles southwest of Havana, Cuba. Due to the proximity to Cuba, the Cuban Coast Guard also responded to the search.
Kaylyn Rose Sommer was aboard Norwegian Pearl for a 4 day Mad Decent Boat Party cruise to Cozumel, Mexico which had embarked from Miami, Florida on Wednesday, November 11, 2015. She had married on the same cruise a year ago.
The captain had made an announcement two hours before she fell, telling passengers not to climb from balcony to balcony.
On Friday morning, the ship’s captain alerted passengers that the boat was turning around and heading back to Miami. Norwegian Cruise Lines, said, “The cruise was not cancelled; the port call to Cozumel will not be happening and the ship is returning to Miami as scheduled.”
Since the ship was detained for the search and rescue, there was no time for the port call at Cozumel. This is the reality of cruise ship overboard deaths, which have taken place much too frequently in recent months.
Musicians Dillon Francis, Thomas Jack and others, were supposed to get on the cruise ship when it arrived at Cozume, Mexico never boarded the ship. Social media posttngs called the cruise “most depressing rave cruise of all time”.
Norwegian Cruise Lines , said in a statement, “A female guest was observed intentionally going overboard while the ship was sailing in the Yucatan Channel,”
Mad Decent said in a statement Friday. “The safety and security of our guests and the ship’s crew is our number one priority, all appropriate safety precautions will continue to be taken for this and all of our events. Our hearts go out to the family and all involved in this incident, and we will continue to support those affected during this difficult time.”
The cruise line says it deployed three rescue boats and notified the United States Coast Guard (USCG). Petty Officer 1st Class Stephen Lehmann said the Coast Guard received a report from the crew of the Norwegian Pearl about 7 p.m. that a woman had fallen 22 miles off Cuba’s coast.
The Coast Guard sent a cutter and an airplane to assist in the search, which was made more difficult by rain and darkness. On Saturday, the USCG called off the search for Kaylyn, after searching more than 600 square mile area.
