On Tuesday, November 17, 2015, Karl Edwin Simmons, 61, Shoreacres, Texas, was a passenger aboard Norwegian Cruise Line Norwegian Jade when died while snorkeling on an excursion with Belize City tour company, H2O Tierra in Shark Ray Alley, within the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve at Caye Caulker, Belize.

Karl Edwin Simmons was snorkeling with his wife Esther Simmons, 56, when strong currents in the area caused her to drift away from the snorkeling group. Mr. Simons went to assist her and as a result he too started to drift away and disappeared into the water. Guides later found him motionless and unresponsive, floating face down. They tried to assist him.

Simmons was immediately transported to the Caye Caulker Polyclinic where he was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr. Michael Medina at 12:45PM. An autopsy performed by examination carried out by Dr. Mario Estradabran identified Simmons’ cause of death as “asphyxiation by drowning”.

Esther Simmons survived the snorkeling incident. The Simmons were members of First United Methodist Church in La Porte, Texas.
