James Stewart “Jimmy” Bain, Died Aboard Def Leppard Cruise, Hysteria on the High Seas MSC Cruises, MSC Divina January 23, 2016, Time of Death Unknown.
James Stewart “Jimmy” Bain, 68, a Scottish hard rock, blues, rock, heavy metal musician, best known for playing bass guitar in the bands Rainbow, Dio and Last in Line, died on Saturday January 23, 2016 during the Def Leppard cruise, “Hysteria on the High Seas”.
The cruise was aboard MSC Cruises MSC Divina which embarked on January 21 and was to return to Miami, Florida on Monday January 25. Bain died in his cruise ship cabin before he could preform. He was due to perform on the cruise with his group Last In Line the following day.The performance did not go ahead with band members informing fans on the cruise that he had been battling pneumonia for some time. The cause of death was later determined to be lung cancer. Bain had not been diagnosed with cancer and was only aware of his pneumonia.
Bain’s final live performance was at the Complimentary Pre-Party held at the Magic City Casino in Miami, Florida on January 20, 2016.
The remaining members of Last in Line gathered for a public remembrance of Bain while still at sea, featuring Eddie Trunk as the emcee. The band shared videos, a slideshow and stories about Bain during the event, and also played songs in his honor. “It was tough for all, but handled the best it could be. My condolences to the band, his fans and his family.”, Trunk said.
“Hysteria on the High Seas” included scheduled performers Def Leppard, Last in Line, KIX, Tom Keifer, Kip Winger, Eric Martin and Richie Kotzen during the four-night cruise to the Bahamas.
Guitarist Vivian Campbell who is a member of both Def Leppard and Last in Line, said that Bain had been drug-free for roughly a year and half.
