Togo D. West Jr., 75 , was on a Silversea Cruises Caribbean cruise when he had a heart attack and died on Thursday, March 8, 2018 while sailing between Barbados and Puerto Rico.
West was named after the Japanese naval hero Togo Heihachiro, whose leadership during the Russo-Japanese War dominated newspaper headlines at the time of his birth in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. While a law student at Howard, West became the managing editor for the Howard Law Journal.
West is survived by his wife of 51 years, lawyer Gail Berry West of Washington and two daughters, Tiffany West Smink of Denver and Hilary Carter West of Washington; and two grandchildren.
