Doctor Paolo Mudano, 69, Costa Fascinosa Covid-19 Illness Death – On Wednesday April 5, 2020, Doctor Paolo Mudano, 69, from Genoa, Italy, was a doctor aboard Costa Cruises ship Costa Fascinosa when he contracted Covid-19 and died while the cruise ship was in Santos, Brazil.
Dr Paolo Mudano, originally from San Lazzaro di Savena and residing in Genoa, had disembarked following an illness last week and was hospitalized at the Santos hospital.
On April 4, he presented respiratory failure, cough, fever, tachycardia and was transported by ambulance to a private hospital in Santos, Brazil to undergo necessary tests and treatments. Paolo entered consciously, but with difficulty in breathing. After the diagnosis of viral pneumonia, he had to be admitted. The next day, he had to be sent to the ICU, requiring mechanical ventilation.
He was medicated with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin. Even so, he worsened his symptoms and had to undergo hemodialysis, which continued to worsen and, consequently, he died.
He had no comorbidities and was cremated that afternoon so that the ashes could be sent to the family, who live in Genoa, Italy.
According to Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), there were nearly 60 suspected coronavirus cases aboard Costa Fascinosa.
