On March 25, 2007, around 0100 hours, cruise ship passengers Airforce Cadet Ernesto Guzman, 22, and Certified Lifeguard Clarice Partee, 20, fall overboard from Princess Cruises' Grand Princess into the 70° water of the Gulf of Mexico.

Grand Princess had embarked on a seven-day spring break cruise out of Galveston, Texas. The first night of the cruise, Clarice Partee, from Arkansas, a sophomore sociology major at the University of Colorado and Ernesto Guzman, a U.S. Air Force Academy cadet, were having a party in Clarice Partee'' cabin with a group of young adults.

The party was loud and crew members reported the cabin was trashed. The party broke up around 0100 hours and Guzman and Partee were on the balcony alone when Partee fell overboard during a stunt, and Guzman jumped in after her.

Grand Princess crew began searching within ten minutes. They found Partee, who was recovered first, four hours into the search. She had suffered broken ribs and a lung contusion and was later treated in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Cancun.

Guzman was found 30 minutes later, naked in the water. He had received jellyfish stings, but was otherwise uninjured. Guzman said that he took off his clothes to help him swim. A Grand Princess casino worker said that Guzman told him, "He said she (Partee) took a running jump and as she tried to land on my back, she did a leapfrog forward. He grabbed her leg to try to save her, and the momentum pulled him in after her."
